I named this newsletter No Blueprint because there is NO blueprint in the sports world. It is an untraditional space where half the time you get jobs before they are posted. There are 500 different ways to the top and I look forward to sharing some of those with you.

One way to standout: Write letters. People enjoy opening something up. The start of school is an excuse to reach out to coaches. “Hey Coach Smith good luck with practice as school gets going. Have a good week.” Keep it simple, throw the jab not the hook.

Networking tip: Go around to the people you constantly email and introduce yourself face to face. If you do this then next time your email comes across their screen you’re not just an address you’re a person.

I think about this famous boxing quote from time to time. Small precise details win.
“The hook will take you around the block but the jab will take you around the world.”
1 Idea for you
Your follow up is EVERYTHING
Imagine you are 24 hours away from a road trip to play at Yale University and you get told that your hotels are booked for the wrong YEAR.
This happened to me when I was the DOBO at Siena College. We started using a new travel company out of Canada who had messed up a few times so I made sure to follow up every trip. I would email 10 days out, text 5 days out, and call 3 days out.
For some reason my gut told me to check one more time on this Yale trip. I had the sense that the rep was annoyed I kept following up. Sure enough I called a fourth time and the company had booked our hotels for December of 2021 when it was supposed to be 2020. A FULL YEAR OFF.
If I had not called that fourth time we would have showed up with no hotels. Luckily we were able to resolve the issue before we left and it all worked out.
Your follow up is everything in anything you do, you’re not being annoying you’re making sure it’s done correctly.
🔥 Chop Talk Podcast
Back in 2020 I had a conversation with Josh King who was coaching pro ball in Germany. Now he is coach pro in Australia. The episode is packed with value and Josh is one of my favorite people in basketball.
As always thank you for reading
