I named this newsletter No Blueprint because there is NO blueprint in the sports world. There are 500 different ways to the top and I look forward to sharing some of those with you. Thanks for reading!

One way to standout: Have your development team print a roster of your team on card stock paper (include headshots). Leave one on every other seat court side. This allows your premium seat members to be more engaged.

III

Networking tip: Volunteer to let the other team in the gym for shoot arounds. This allows you to interact face to face with people in the business.

How I look at scheduling

It’s that time of the year where we open the ESPN app and say “Wow can you believe ______ beat them? Brutal buy game loss.” When you’re at a low major you’re trying to steal one and at a high major you’re trying to avoid disaster. During my time at Providence and Georgetown I learned how important scheduling is.

Here are 5 things I look at when scheduling money games.

  1. If the main goal is to boost your budget then a “bus game” is a must. Can we play a game where we bus there and save money on a flight? Can we play a game in a non city where hotels are cheap and don’t charge for late check outs etc?

  2. The 60/40 rule. For buy games ask yourself, do we have a 40% chance of pulling this off? If yes, that’s a good buy. Below are some factors to determine that.

  3. Environment. Look at the box scores from the previous seasons and see what the average home attendance was for non conference games. Some high majors will only draw 5-7 thousand. If there’s no crowd that’s one less advantage.

  4. Resources: Are they at the top of their league in NIL? If they are, then you know they may be able to move differently in the portal than others.

  5. Returners: This is hard with how the portal is changing things however you want to look at who potentially can come back / graduate. You also want to try an gauge who is having a good year and may leave. Everyone’s strategy is different.
