I named this newsletter No Blueprint because there is NO blueprint in the sports world. It is an untraditional space where half the time you get jobs before they are posted. There are 500 different ways to the top and I look forward to sharing some of those with you. Thanks for reading!

Fall recruiting tip: Make a schedule of who you need to see. Try to line up multiple schools in one day to get the most out of your time. Know the people you need to hit in each area you’re going to!!

III

Networking tip: Listen to podcasts of coaches. Email that coach about something he said on that podcast. Be different.

1 Idea for you

ALWAYS Check the bathroom

Official visits are underway. As recruits come to campus ask yourself how are you going to help your head coach separate the program from others? The answer is simple, little things matter. Here are 9 small things that make a difference for official visits.

  1. Check the bathroom of the hotel rooms. I’ve found hairs on the sink and tissues in the toilet before. That would have been an awful first impression.

  2. Hand written notes. Make it personal not corporate.

  3. Understand what he likes to eat. You can pick the best local spots for that.

  4. Make sure the ARMS paperwork is submitted ahead of time.

  5. Be able to articulate a plan. Put time into whatever you’re presenting.

  6. Wash and organize your car before picking them up.

  7. Figure out what music he likes. Have that playing in the car as you pick him up or when he walks in for the photoshoot.

  8. Have a case of water in the office in case they are thirsty after walking around campus.

  9. Understand that the assistant coach who is point on the kid has probably been recruiting him for over a year. Put yourself in his shoes. If you were talking to someone for over a year and it comes down to this one visit you’d want to do a great job.
