NBA GM Thought
I attended a NBA GM conference during summer league. While they were speaking I took some notes. Below are things that stood out to me. Enjoy
25 Takeaways:
Trust your people. People you rely on have to be able to do their job. “It’s amazing what can happen when you allow people to run.”
Get people who win. Who is part of a winning org?
Spend a ton of time on who you hire. Vet them out.
Know what your head coach likes. What is the one thing he loves and hates. Don’t bring in a guy who does something the HC hates.
When evaluating some things to look for. Have they shown a track record of getting better? Where are they in their cycle of life? Bunch of stops?
Motor can be coached. Depends who they are around
In the NBA by mid second year if they can’t make the rotation it’s probably tough to be successful
Analytics group is in every meeting. Look at the numbers that are opposite of what you see. If eyes tell you one thing and number say opposite. DIG in on that.
Use numbers to dig in on the ONE “piece” that player does well. Shooting rebounds etc
Who is a monster in winning, great teammate, championships?
Call on guys. Talk to their equipment guys. Academic pulp. Professors.
Don’t confuse emotional instability with his want to win
If you can get one of the top 8 players at that position you go all in to get them But if you can’t get one of those 8 now what?
Positions have cliffs
Everyone deserves a second chance but not everyone is ready
How do you know? Evidence will tell you.
Get on the ground and get the facts
If you can’t gather intel get out of the business
Don’t complain about guys. You signed them. You didn’t do enough research
More rules the more you have to enforce. Keep it to 4 max
How were their parents? Was the parent trouble?
“Fingerprint” players. How do they treat people?
Give staff recognition. Being humble will spread
Do your homework ahead of time. You’re not at the draft sayin who should be pick?
Who made their bed? Ask when guys go to camps etc how they handle themselves
As always thank you for reading
